Wood and Woodworking in Anglo-Scandinavian and Medieval York (Craft, Industry and Everyday Life)

Introduction to the Wooden Material:

This work is the definitive study of over 1500 wooden objects, and woodworking tools of both wood and iron, recovered from 16-22 Coppergate and the subsequent watching brief at the Coppergate development site, from 22 Piccadilly and from the Foundry and College of the Vicars Chloral sites at Bedern.
The author has examined many of the Dublin wooden artefacts and has discussed some of them elsewhere but in this fascicule, where ever possible they are compared and contrasten with those from Anglo-Scandinavian York. Similar comparisons have been made with wooden artefacts from other major British sites where smaller amounts of waterlogged wood have been preserved, such as London, Winchester etc.
The author’s unpublished PhD.thesis contains an exhaustive corpus of wooden material excavated from British archaeological sites before 1984 dating from AD 400-1500 and much of that material has been used in this report.
